Lords of Metal intervista Diego!
La webzine olandese Lords of Metal, dopo una bella recensione, ci onora nuovamente con una lunga e interessante intervista a Diego!
Recently The Void signed a record-deal with the Italian label My Kingdom Music and with that they also celebrate the tenth anniversary of the band. This combo is mostly inspired by bands like Moonspell, Tiamat and Paradise Lost; a dedication that can definitely be heard in the opus of this three-headed Italian dark metal band. Per mail I talked with the proud singer Diego about their tenth anniversary, the reviews of the band and the rebuilding of The Void.
First of all: Can you give a short history of The Void during the last ten years, especially on the musical side?
The Void is established in 1998, but found their final line up in 1999. From the beginning it has been clear which way we were about to follow: creating our own songs and not just being a simple cover band. For our first demo 'The Void' (2001) the main features were darkness and sadness. Year after year we played this melancholic music, which found its greatest expression in our second demo 'Her Obscure Heart'. From the second demo till this day our sound became more and more gloomy and aggressive. We also mentioned it as 'tragic metal' in order to underline both our main features; deep internal pain and rage born from this pain. I guess that our first two full-length CD's perfectly represent our music in its wholeness; all the songs express our sorrow in front of daily tragic happenings and our disappointment for not being able to avoid all of this.
As I mentioned in the first question you're already exist for ten years. Will you celebrate this in a special way?
Well, I must admit we talked about it but we haven't decided anything clear and definitive yet. Surely the greatest way to celebrate is the contract with our label; My Kingdom Music. Probably we are going to invent something when we return on the stage, which will be at the end of this year. In fact, our work duties and the recording sessions of "Vision of The Truth" forced us not to play live for a long time (more than a year) and a good way to celebrate our anniversary would be playing again in front of an audience.
You've signed a deal with My Kingdom Music; a company which is promoting a lot of new bands throughout Europe and I've already reviewed some of them, like Dperd, Shivan and The Sun Of Weakness. The intro of the website of the label says; "Enter The Dream". Was it also a dream of you signing a deal with them? And how is it working with this label?
Absolutely yes! A dream came true, just to say something 'really original'! We have been trying to be signed by a label since we realised we wanted to create our own music. For every demo we released we received great positive feedbacks, but on the other way no one really wanted to support us and propose a contract or a deal. That was quite frustrating. Moreover, the work we counted on 'Remember' sounded too raw and paradoxically; it has been the less appreciated among all our productions. Anyway, we were able to go further and record another complete CD; 'Vision of The Truth'. Without changing our way, just developing it, learning by our past and mistakes. And this time, we got the jackpot; My Kingdom Music decided to support us and it has been the best thing that could happen to us at that moment! They are doing such great things and we are sure about it, since we had already cooperated with MKM Promotion (an agency strictly bound to My Kingdom Music).
When you started The Void the band had four members. Nowadays you have only three members; in 2006 the guitar player left The Void. Why did he decide to quit the band? Did you search for a new member, why or why not?
Pietro, our former guitar player, could not combine music and his studies anymore. The university takes away a lot of time and I damn know it! I can guarantee you that it was a very painful split. None of us wanted him to leave The Void and neither did he, but it was inevitable. At least we wanted him to play at 'Vision of The Truth', but he preferred to step away in silence and shadow, not to 'force' us to include his name on the CD cover while he wasn't a part of the band anymore. Andrea, Giorgio and I have always been the core of The Void; that's why we could work in perfect tuning, even when there were only three of us left. For the upcoming live shows we will work with another guitar player, but at the moment I cannot tell you whether he will be officially part of The Void or not. Discussions about looking for a keyboard player and / or another guitar player (and let me only sing during live shows) are on the line, but they will be at the background. The most important thing for us now is to be ready for live shows as soon as possible with the three of us, and our (for the moment) session guitar player.
Your bass player Giorgio also plays keyboards and you as a singer play some guitar and keyboards. As I understand it's not possible to play all those instruments on stage? How will you solve this problem live?
At the beginning I was singing and playing the guitar together with another guitar player and we also had a keyboard player. Then we lost our guitar player and went on with only one guitar. But when we also lost our keyboard player (for working duties), then it became a real problem. We decided to play our live gigs with some keyboard basis, even when this gave us less chances to speed up or improvise. Anyway, above all it worked out very well. When we were recording 'Vision of The Truth' we realised that it was the best CD we had ever produced to play live. This brought us to a decision; we returned into hard rock and roll, rejecting keyboard basis in almost all our songs and using the keyboards only when it was necessary. For example, when you listen the chorus of 'Sad Moon' in a dark room, the choir melodies are so suggestive. But if you're listening to us live, with the drums louder than ever, two massive guitars and me screaming you probably do not mind the melodies are not there. So, if a melody is needed, someone of us (either Giorgio, me or the other guitar player) is going to play the keyboards; otherwise you are going to experience a stronger and more live version of our music.
You definitely have a great voice. You can use it in a lot of different ways; rough singing, clear clean vocals, grunts and massive dark voices are filling up the album. A lot of male singers must be jealous of you, so here are a couple of singer related questions for you. One: haven't you ever felt some jealousy from a fellow singer?
First, I do thank you for appreciating my voice. I can guarantee you, that there are some people who do not think the same way as you do. In some reviews I could read about 'a terrible voice', 'out of tune singer', 'pathetic vocals line' and so on, so it is so important and motivating for me to hear your approval. Answering your question… yes! Definitely yes! Maybe you have already guessed it, but the singer I am most jealous of is Fernando Ribeiro. I love his voice so much, so deep, so expressive, so strong. I also like Dani Filth, but I never tried to emulate him, even because we are not so extreme.
Two: great singers often receive an offer from a big band or famous musicians when they start their own band. Have you ever had offers to join such a band?
No, I would like to say 'unfortunately', but it would be false, and I am going to explain why later.
As I said before, not everyone thinks that I am such a great singer. Someone thinks that I use my voice in a too theatrical way, someone else that I am out of tune, someone that I am pathetic and that I am unable to speak English. I try to learn from constructive critics and completely ignore free, personal and only destructive ones. The reason why I did not say 'unfortunately' is that The Void is a part of me; I was one of the creators and I musically grew up with them. I would not be able to deal with two bands and I would never leave The Void for another band. Believe me when I'm saying that I would refuse a contract with a top band if that would mean I have to leave The Void.
I think the production of the sound of the CD could be better, but the songs are mixed very well and you play a rapid game, which goes by fluently. Are you satisfied with the recordings and did it go very well or did you have had some difficulties during the recordings?
I'm a man who's never satisfied and I agree with you when you're saying that the production of the CD could be better. We are learning; we recorded our CD 'Farewell' and that one sounded really rough. I think we really improved this with 'Remember' and I guess that 'Vision of The Truth' is another step further. But I'm still not satisfied yet. Our meanings are not the same as a professional studio; that's just our experience. I think these things are the main reason why it's still not a complete satisfying production.
I think you're really in the line of Moonspell, Tiamat and Paradise Lost and of course that's really great. If you could be a support-act of one of these bands, which one should you choose and why?
I definitely choose Moonspell. The reason is simple: I love them, I have all the CD's and I felled in love with their sound since I heard the first note from them. They are so gloomy, so aggressive and so flexible! The music they play is not the same canonical gothic songs; it is music at 360°, seldom banal, often spring of inspiration.
The summer is on its way, which means there are a lot of festivals coming up. If you could chose one for playing live with The Void. Which one should it be and why?
Well, I guess I would choose 'The Gods of Metal' or the 'Heineken Jammin' Festival'. The reason is quite simple: they are in Italy. Is not laziness, but it is more practical. As I have already said; we have not played together for a long time and we are now returning day by day to our old level of performance, but we are still not ready yet. I prefer to play a short time, but at the best of my chances. Therefore, it would be better for us to play in our hometown than in a foreign country. Maybe the expectations and demanding in terms of performance length for an unknown band are higher (but I could be wrong on this point).
Any chance I can see you perform in the The Netherlands some day?
Who knows? If everything goes well we cannot exclude this possibility. Definitely if all Dutch people appreciate our music the way you do!
